GATES COUNTY NEWS -- Families Save-A-Lot by stocking up on canned foods for future meals during an economic hardship. Modern grocers manage inventory with a strict Just In Time (JIT) inventory control in order to maximize profits. During a recessive economy, food stock-outs are most commonly caused by erratically fluctuating supply and demand. Imported food prices increase due to dollar devaluation. Fresh food costs increase due to production and distribution costs. Additionally, the frequency of stock-outs and inflation increases with the rate at which the economy fails. All of these factors leave the general public (including Gates County) at the mercy of financial hardship or even starvation. At best all families see a decrease in their standard of living. Nonetheless, there are measures that can be taken to comfortably weather through economic recessions and even economic depression. These measures were learnt from the great depression and World War II, which is the personal stocking of nonperishable food supplies. However, these technics must be modernized to gain the optimum benefits of food storage. So, where do we start? First let us examine where we can buy the cheapest canned vegetables. Currently that is Save-A-Lot in Portsmouth, located at 3815 George Washington Highway. |
